The Strain of the Game

“Hot when it’s supposed to be cold, cold when it’s supposed to be hot"--me. Possibly the most accurate description of the weather I’ve ever given, and I’ve given a few. This describes deer season of 2020. I don’t want it to seem like I’m complaining, I’m simply giving the reasons for not putting a 180” stud on the ground this year.

There was no shortage of deer sits. Kyle and I sat sum 80 hours in the tree or on the ground this year (not an exaggeration). You’re probably thinking no way, that’s impossible, aren’t you both college students? We are, but we were given the not so generous gift of a global pandemic. With classes online we had an abundance of time to try and stick a deer… and were still unsuccessful. Like I said above, we weren’t given the best weather. Low twenties in October, mid-seventies in November. In fact, the cover picture for this blog was taken on November 6th I believe. What you can’t see in the photo are the two liter bottles of water sitting next to each of us. “Survivor man” Les Stroud always used to say, “If you sweat you die,” and man were we sweating.

At the end of the day we can’t really complain about the season. We had some shooters do what they were supposed to, we just messed it up. Can’t kill a deer with the glare of a camera let me tell you. That’s the second thing you have to worry about, first just make sure you can get the camera rolling. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to turn a camera on in 15 degree weather. I guess that's just the strain of the game.
